City Wins Anti-Hunger Grant

Winston-Salem is one of six cities selected to receive a grant and technical assistance from the National League of Cities to expand the use of federal nutrition programs to fight hunger in the community. The city will receive $115,500 to work with local agencies to increase participation in after-school and summer feeding programs for students and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for low-income households. Bicycle Master Plan Recommendations To Be Unveiled

Consultants updating the city's bicycle master plan will present their recommendations and collect feedback at a public input session from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Enterprise Center, 1922 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

A presentation on the proposed recommendations will be held at the start of the meeting. Afterwards, attendees will be able view the recommendations in detail, ask questions and provide their thoughts to DOT staff. Detailed maps and charts will be available for inspection, showing specific streets and the type of improvement (e. g. bike lanes) the consultants recommend for each.

Community Band Concert Aug. 5

The Winston-Salem Community Band will give a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Lewisville Baptist Church, 125 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, Lewisville. Free hot dogs and ice cream will be served after the concert. The band will play nine songs, including "The Liberty Bell March" by John Phillip Sousa, "The Strenuous Life" by Scott Joplin, "Salute to Louis Armstrong" arranged by Eric Osterling, and "If Thou Be Near" by Johann Sebastian Bach.

WePLAY Movies in the Park

WePLAY Movies in the Park

The last of installment of the WePLAY Movies in the Park series will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 with a free screening of "The Incredibles" at Jamison Park. Food trucks will be on site, and pre-movie activities will begin at 6. The movie will begin at dusk. Residents should bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on.

Winston-Salem Recognized for Performance Management Achievement

Winston-Salem's efforts in the area of data-driven management and reporting have been recognized with a Certificate of Achievement in Performance Management by the International City/County Management Association. Performance management includes identifying, collecting, analyzing and reporting on indicators that show how well an organization performs internally and delivers services to the public. The data also is used to identify priorities for improvement, and for benchmarking with peer jurisdictions. READ MORE

Staff Complete School of Government Course

Wanda Allen-Abraha, the human relations director; and Scott Tesh, the director of the Office of Performance & Accountability, recently completed the Municipal and County Administration course of the School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill. The course is approximately 150 hours in length and covers such topics as local government organization and management, finance and budgeting, employment law, planning and more.
