Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC)

The City-County Planning staff and Winston-Salem Department of Transportation Staff provide support to the Winston-Salem Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, more commonly known as The Winston-Salem Urban Area Transportation Advisory Committee, (TAC). Transportation Advisory Committees were developed from federal legislation to promote the development of transportation systems embracing various modes of transportation in a manner which will efficiently minimize transportation-related fuel consumption and air pollution. To accomplish this objective, transportation advisory committees, in conjunction the State, shall develop transportation plans and programs for urbanized areas. Such plans and programs shall provide for the development of transportation facilities (including pedestrian walkways, bicycle facilities, and public transit facilities) which will function as an intermodal transportation system. The process for developing such plans and programs shall provide for all modes of transportation and shall be continuing, cooperative and comprehensive.

The Winston-Salem Urban Area Transportation Advisory Committee serves as a medium for open discussion and policy development for recommendations made to the general bodies of local government and the boards of various modes of transportation and as a forum for cooperative transportation planning, and decision making. Voting representation on the Winston-Salem Urban Area Transportation Advisory Committee is from: bodies of local government, including the municipalities of Bermuda Run, Bethania, Clemmons, Kernersville, King, Lewisville, Midway, Rural Hall, Tobaccoville, Walkertown, Wallburg, Winston-Salem and the counties of Forsyth, Davidson, Davie and Stokes; and also representatives from the North Carolina Board of Transportation and the Winston-Salem Transit Authority. The TAC votes on transportation and transportation related matters. It is understood that when representatives on the TAC vote, they are voting the policy of the local government in which they represent.
