Police Department - February 22, 2018

The Winston-Salem Police Department has released a short video about the unsolved homicide of Rakem Joseph Green, 19, in the hope of turning up new information in the case.

Green was shot in a vacant lot on Fir Drive on the city's south side on the evening of Nov. 28, 2016. He fled through a patch of woods and collapsed from his injuries in the backyard of a house on the next block. Green’s two companions called for an ambulance, but he died on the way to the hospital.

The video has been posted on the city's Facebook page and is being promoted within the zip code where Green was shot, said Lt. Michael Cardwell of the Criminal Investigations Division. "We believe that this is a crime that can be solved but we are not receiving any cooperation from the two people who were with Mr. Green that night," Cardwell said. "We believe there are people out there who have information that can help us solve this case, and we're hoping that this video will bring them to contact Crimestoppers. Any bit of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, can help."

Crimestoppers is offering cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest in this case. Callers do not have to identify themselves. The Crimestoppers telephone number is 336-727-2800.

The video also is showing on WSTV (the city TV channel on TimeWarner Cable and AT&T U-verse) and is posted on the city's YouTube channel.

There were six unsolved homicides during 2016. With the assistance of the city's Marketing & Communications Department, the Police Department is releasing a series of videos about these cases.
