Recycling in Winston-Salem

THE PROGRAM

The Recycle Today program provides recycling collection to single-family households, some small businesses, and multi-family units that have requested recycling service. Collection is performed by a private contractor, Waste Management.

The program recycles those items found in the Preparing Materials guidelines, no sorting necessary. Rollout recycling carts must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day. Please ensure that the cart is at least three feet from any other object, including another cart. Do not place your cart under low-hanging wires or branches.

Recyclable materials are taken to a Materials Recovery Facility where they are separated, baled, and prepared for market. Ultimately, those recyclables will come back in the form of new products.

RECYCLING DROP OFFS

The City also provides a drop-off station for recyclable materials at the Hanes Mill Road Landfill that can be used at no charge. Additionally, nine drop-off sites for corrugated cardboard are provided at select fire stations throughout the city. Through a contract with Forsyth County, the City manages Forsyth County’s two Drop-off Recycling Centers.

COMMERCIAL RECYCLING

Recycling is available to qualifying small businesses. Businesses that receive once-a-week hand collection of garbage qualify to participate in the Small Business Curbside Recycling Program.

Businesses (including churches and non-profit organizations) that are ineligible for the city's program are: 1) those that use a dumpster for garbage collection, and 2) those located in the Central Business District receiving hand collection of garbage six days a week.

WHY RECYCLE?

Recycling is the right economic and environmental choice. Recycling INCREASES the life span of landfills; SAVES money, natural resources and energy; REDUCES air and water pollution; and CREATES jobs and market demand for recyclable products. Any way that you look at it, recycling is the right thing to do!

Don't forget to recycle when traveling too! If you are driving, keep some bags in the car to collect recyclables.

Recycling - It's in the Bag!

recycling- its in the bag logoThe plastic bag, that is. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle your plastic bags by bringing them back to a local grocery store near you and placing them in the designated bins near the doors. The City of Winston-Salem's Sanitation Department is responsible for the collection and recovery of the recyclable materials in the city. The material recovery facility, MRF, is stopped approximately three times a day to unclog the machinery used at the facility. The machines are getting clogged primarily with plastic bags that are incorrectly thrown in the blue recycling bins in people's homes. Out aim in the Sustainability Office is to reduce the cost to the department, and ultimately the consumer, by reducing plastic bag use in out community.
