Property Tax Letters to be Mailed Out

Letters detailing (estimated) property tax information will be mailed to newly-annexed city residents at the end of December. Be aware that city property taxes for 2006/2007 and for 2007/2008 will be due in September 2007. Your county property taxes will also be due, as usual, in September 2007.

Refunds for Fire District Taxes to be Mailed Out

Checks to refund nine months of fire district taxes will be mailed to newly-annexed city residents at the end of December 2006.

What services can you expect, as a city resident?

As a part of the city, you can expect an increased level of police protection. Officers patrol all sectors of the city 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and provide an emergency response time of 6 minutes or less from the time the 911 call is received until officers arrive.

The Winston-Salem Fire department will provide you with enhanced fire suppression services, including a response time to fire calls of 4 minutes or less, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Sanitation Division provides a comprehensive package of services, including weekly back yard garbage collection, weekly curbside recycling collection, and optional weekly yard waste cart collection. There is also leaf pickup during the season, a bulky-item pickup once a year, Christmas tree collection, and regular brush collection.  City residents are entitled to 2 free trips to the landfill yearly, and hazardous wastes can be taken to 3RC-The Envirostation.

Streets are cleaned, maintained, and paved under the proper conditions (see brochure for more details) and major roadways are cleared of snow and ice after winter storms. Streets that meet minimum state standards will have streetlights installed.

City residents pay a reduced rate for water and sewer service and enjoy some of the lowest rates for water and sewer service in the state. Residents in annexed areas will have the option of petitioning to have water or sewer lines extended along their street so they can connect to the system.

There are many recreation opportunities for the whole family in the city parks and recreation centers, and there are greenways that go through the city. The Vegetation Management Division maintains landscaping in the right-of-way of roads in the city. Enforcement of housing codes is provided by city inspectors.

Who will be your City Council member?

Winston-Salem is organized into 8 wards, and voters in each ward elect a member to the city council. The next city elections will be held in 2009. Newly-annexed citizens will temporarily be placed in the wards immediately adjacent to their neighborhoods.
