About the North Ward
The North Ward is that area of our City bounded by Highway 52 and Patterson Avenue on the east, Northwest Boulevard on the south, University Parkway and Bethabara Road on the west and the City limits on the north.
Nelson Malloy represents these citizens on the City Council.
Diversity best describes North Ward. Here you will find recreation, affordable housing, beautiful retirement opportunities, as well as a variety of restaurants and hotels.
The necessities...such as shopping, schools, and a post office are here too.
The North Ward for many years was synonymous with the tobacco industry. The RJ Reynolds Whitaker Park facility is one of the world's largest and most modern cigarette manufacturing plants.
The former RJR World Headquarters building across the street is now owned by Wake Forest University and is known as University Corporate Center. This 525 thousand square foot facility lists Aon Consulting, I L Long Contruction Company and Pepsi-Cola Customer Service Center as tenants.
Community services including Goodwill of Northwest North Carolina, Today's Women Health Wellness Center and the Industries for the Blind are here too.
North Ward residents are served by the Martin Luther King Community Recreation Center and Kimberly Park Pool, and Brown and Douglas Neighborhood Recreation Center on Indiana Avenue.
The Hanes Hosiery Center on Reynolds Boulevard was torn down and a new recreation center has been built on the site. The ballfields at Hanes have a sports history that reaches back 75 years.
Soccer is the game at Hine Park and Sara Lee Soccer Park. The Bethabara Park Greenway and Historic Bethabara's nature preserve can mean a relaxing stroll. Protected in these woods are traces of the great wagon road that brought the first settlers here and an earthen fort that dates to colonial times.
Schools in the North Ward include Paisley, Cook and Northwest Middle Schools, Oldtown, North Hills, Kimberly Park and Julian Gibson Elementary School.
The City owned Woodland Cemetery is off Patterson Avenue. It was first used in 1905. The narrow paths reflect that it was laid out to accommodate horse and buggy before automobiles.
The city's solid waste landfill and recycling area is just off U S 52. Here the city disposes of some eighty thousand tons of waste annually.
If one area of our City could be called the entertainment capital, it would be here in North Ward; Winston-Salem Entertainment-Sports Complex...home of the Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum Complex. The main Coliseum along with the Coliseum Annex, the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds and the Education building are the scene of a wide variety of events during the year from basketball and concerts to ice skating and craft and trade shows. In the fall, everyone comes to the Dixie Classic Fair, which is the second largest fair in the state of North Carolina.
University Parkway from the Coliseum Complex to downtown has been enhanced with the completion of landscaping and fencing by the city's Roadway Appearance Department.
In North Ward there is an abundance of affordable housing such as Esquire Place, Neal Place, Astor Park and Glen Oaks. Near the city limits, subdivision such as Moravian Forest and Mallard Lakes bring country living to the city. Some of the city's's newest town home and apartment complexes are in North Ward.
Comfortable retirement settings such as the Moravian Home, Inc. and Salem Town are here.... away from the hustle of the commercial areas.
The North Ward....a proud and vibrant part of Winston-Salem.
