Go Green Winston-Salem: Sustainability Today & Tomorrow

Celebrate with the City of Winston-Salem as we highlight the city's growing 'Green' influence in everything from transportation to business, in a week-long celebration! A series of events is planned for September 15-19, including several elementary school presentations with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, 3 unique forums focusing on 'Greening Your Business,' 'Green Building and Sustainable Community' and 'Transportation' (more information below), as well as special Green-themed booths at the city's annual 'Rock the Block' downtown event on Friday, September 19th. Sustainable City Celebration Forums
(Note: all forums are free, and if you are interested in attending one or more forums, please register below so we have an accurate count of attendees!)
All Forums will be followed by a networking reception from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Forum 1: "Greening Your Business"
Tuesday, September 16, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the LJVM Coliseum, Windsor Suite. (map) (please register below)
The "Greening Your Business" forum will offer businesses of all sizes the opportunity to hear about strategies that are being used locally and around the state to make their enterprises more energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive. Speakers will also provide information about resources available to businesses that want to 'go green.'

The opportunities and challenges of 'Going Green,' Presenter: Hanesbrands, Inc.
Adopting efficiency measures, reducing waste, and engaging employees has helped Hanesbrands, Inc. save money while reducing the company's 'carbon footprint.' Hear how one local company addressed the issue of making itself more sustainable, and the challenges and opportunities they faced in the process.

Resources for making your business more sustainable, Presenter: Rachel Eckert, NC Dept. of Environmental & Natural Resources.
There is a wealth of information and resources available to businesses trying to become a "little greener." Learn how to be economical while being environmentally conscious, and how both options are easily within reach for businesses and industries. Just by considering a few simple changes in your everyday activities, you can really impact your ecological footprint.

Winston-Salem's leadership initiatives for reducing our carbon footprint, Presenter: Randy Rogers, City of Winston-Salem, Facilities Management Director
In 2006 Mayor Allen Joines and the Winston-Salem City Council signed on to the US Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement and was named a Sierra Club "Cool City." Since then, city staff has worked to address energy use by the city. The city's recently released report highlights the progress we have made to date, and lists possible steps for moving us closer to our goals of becoming a greener city.

Luxury meets LEEDership in the hotel industry, Presenters: Dennis Quaintance, Proximity Hotel
Proximity Hotel, a AAA Four Diamond, locally-owned hotel in Greensboro, was built to use 36% less energy and 30% less water than a comparable hotel. Proximity was designed to granted the LEED (gold) standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), and has been called one of the greenest hotels in the country. Dennis Quaintance will talk about what motivated him to design a hotel and adopt an economic model that combines luxury with sustainable practices.
Forum 2: "Green Building and Sustainable Community"
Wednesday, September 17, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center, South Main Hall. (map) (please register below)

Hear the latest in local green building design and construction techniques, low-impact development, and sustainable land planning at the "Green Building and Sustainable Community" forum. Sit in on a panel discussion and ask questions of the professionals!

With fuel costs reaching record highs, transportation has become a major cost for everyone. Vehicle emissions are a major source of environmental issues of concern to many people and affect our quality of life. The Transportation forum will offer alternatives and solutions to business owners, commuters and residents, showcasing exhibits of vehicles, methods and information to help reduce both costs and emissions.
