Brownfields

The Brownfields program includes Job Training Grants and Revolving Loan Fund Grants. View eligibility criteria and scroll to the bottom of the page to read success stories.

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment. For more information on Brownfields, visit the Environmental Protection Agency's website. www.epa.gov/brownfields/about.htm

Success Stories

JKS Signs and Sports

Reinvestment requires vision. Where many saw rubble and debris, JKS saw an opportunity to not only expand its business but to renew community pride in this area of Liberty Street. Over a period of ten years, the company acquired additional property and land. Instead of leveling old buildings, JKS preserved existing architecture whenever possible. The result has been overwhelmingly positive. JKS's complex of buildings is not only visually appealing, but also serves as a constant reminder of community renewal, stability and continuity.

American Transportation and Sewing, Inc (ATSI)

ATSI combines two traditional southeastern industries: textile manufacturing and sewing. (for more details visit ATSI in our tour of Liberty Street). ATSI has become a leader in fine sewing and textile fitting for numerous industries. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast your tent, backpack, vest or sleeping bag may have originated from ATSI. If you travel, your travel bag could have been made here as well. A large amount of office equipment is finished here, as is hospital equipment--everything from gowns, to uniforms to privacy curtains.
