Lightning Safety Awareness

Lightning flashing to the ground

The National Weather Service has declared June 20-26, 2010, as Lightning Safety Awareness Week.

One of the nations deadliest weather phenomena is lightning. It strikes all year long, but summer is the peak season.  Lightening is an underrated killer and the intensity is very dangerous combined with any type of outdoor activities.

Lightning is one of the most deadly and damaging types of weather we face in North Carolina, and it typically does not receive enough attention.

An average of 67 people in the United States are killed each year by lightning.

North Carolina ranks in the top ten nationally in lightning casualties.

There are many symptoms one suffers from being struck by lightning. Some of them are debilitating and include long-term effects which include memory loss, attention deficits, sleep disorders, numbness, dizziness, stiffness in joints, irritability, fatigue, weakness, muscle spasms, depression, and an inability to sit for long.

Below are safety/awareness information pages. You may print and post these for others who do not have access to the internet.
