Public Education

Firefighter dressed in turnout gear teaching children during public education program.

Sir Francis Bacon once said "Knowledge is power." In the fire service, we believe that knowledge saves lives. Our children are an excellent example of the manner in which the fire prevention message is spread throughout the community.

The development of "Exit Drills In The Home (E.D.I.T.H.)" has caused children to go home and prompt parents into planning fire escape routes.

"Stop, Drop, and Roll" is the most popular answer firefighters hear when asking children about what to do if their clothes should catch on fire.

Sparky, the fire prevention dog, is one of the most visible proponents of fire education and was created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

We strive to protect our community family through educational efforts, both conventional and unconventional. Suppression personnel conduct educational programs at the fire Kneeling firefighter conversing with physically challenged child in a wheelchair.stations and various locations in the City. Our personnel cover an assortment of topics including fire safety in the home, fire extinguisher training, and commercial fire escape plans. Although we enjoy our contact with all of our customers, we especially treasure the time spent with children, recognizing the role we may play in their lives. It is our hope that through our educational efforts, the effects of fire can be minimized for our customers.

For additional information on our public education efforts, or to schedule a program, contact Mary Fergusson at (336) 773-7965 or e-mail her at maryf@cityofwsfire.org
