In January 2009, in celebration and in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission awarded for the first time the Young Dreamers Award to members of the Winston-Salem community between the ages of 18 and 40 who have made a tangible difference in the lives of others who may have otherwise been overlooked, ignored, or disadvantaged.
This year, nominations will be open to the public. One female and one male awardee will be selected by the Human Relations Commission from submitted nominations. |

Young Dreamers Award Criteria and Rules

Purpose: The purpose of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Young Dreamers’ Award is to recognize one male and female outstanding emerging or proven young adult leader who lives in the City of Winston-Salem and has produced a meaningful result in community inclusiveness and race relations.
Goal: The goal is to encourage young adults to participate in philanthropic, altruistic community involvement that is in the spirit of how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived and encouraged others to live.
Eligibility: Nominees for the award must be between 18-40 years of age. Nominees must be residents of Winston-Salem who have done outstanding work in the Winston-Salem community. Nominees cannot already hold a leadership (i.e., supervisory or management) position in his/her organization.
Criteria: Criteria should include those who have made a tangible difference in the lives of others who may have otherwise been overlooked, ignored, or disadvantaged. Specific examples include fostering positive race relations, vocalizing or acting against an injustice, encouraging inclusiveness among all individuals, embracing those who are perceived as being different, and celebrating religious diversity. There must be a tangible result from their civic- or community-oriented work.
Nominations: A nomination form will be made available to the public, and any citizens of Winston-Salem are asked to nominate men and women who meet the eligibility standards and criteria. Nominations must be received by the Human Relations Department no late than November 12, 2009.
Judging: Members of the Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission will review all nominations and select one male and female nominee to receive the MLK Young Dreamers’ Award.
Award/Recognition: Winners will receive recognition in the form of a plaque and a letter from the Office of the Mayor. The winners will be recognized during a January City Council meeting and will be featured in a press release, on the city’s website, and on TV-13.
