The City of Winston-Salems employment practices are guided by federal, state, and local rules and regulations guaranteeing employment opportunities to all persons without regard to and prohibiting discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, age, religion, political affiliation or beliefs, national origin or handicap, unless a bonafide occupational qualification exists.
The Application Process
Applications are accepted for current, published vacancies only. A separate application must be submitted for each position for which you are applying. You may make copies of your original application and submit one for each position. Resumes may be included with an application but will not be accepted in lieu of an application. Applications may be picked up in our office during normal working hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) or you can download an application. Applications must be FULLY completed (i.e. dates of employment, salary history, reference names and phone numbers, etc.) using black ink. Resumes may not be substituted for employment history. See link at right for printable application.
For positions that require a typing test and/or math test, contact the Human Resources Department at (336) 747-6800 for testing hours and to schedule an appointment.
After the application is received in Human Resources, it will be processed in consideration of the position indicated on the Employment application. Applications from "qualified candidates" will be forwarded to the department for review. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by the Department Supervisor. Only applicants who were selected for interviews will be notified when the position is filled. You will not be notified if you were not interviewed.
The Pre-employment Process
Applicants selected for hire must pass a drug screening test and background check. Some positions may also require a physical examination. If a drug test result is positive, the applicant will be notified in writing by the Human Resources Director of the test result. Job applicants will be denied employment with the city if their drug test is positive. A job applicant who refuses to consent to a drug test will also be denied employment with the city.
