Sanitation Laborer

Workers walk along neighborhood streets to pick up trash bags and loading trash bags into the trucks.

The Sanitation Division has about 200 employees and collects garbage, brush and yard waste. In the spring and summer the division conducts bulky item pick-up and in the fall it collects leaves.

Sanitation laborers are responsible for collecting garbage from city households. Sanitation laborers use a rolling cart to remove garbage from household trash cans and take it to the garbage truck. They use brooms and shovels to clean up spilled garbage. They must be able to lift 50 pounds. They wash the garbage truck. The job requires manual labor and walking all day, in all weather conditions. This job is eligible for overtime pay. The City of Winston-Salem is an equal opportunity employer.
