Utilities Maintenance Worker

The Utilities Construction and Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining about 2,000 miles of water pipes and 1,500 miles of sewer pipes in the city and county. The division has about 150 employees.

A Utilities maintenance worker performs such duties as moving equipment, laying pipes, cutting pavement, excavating, shoveling and filling ditches, and assisting in installing and repairing water and sewer lines and connections. The job is outdoors and requires working in all weather conditions. This work involves manual labor. You must be able to lift 50 pounds individually and up to 100 pounds with assistance. The job may require working during late-night and early-morning hours. To get this job you must have a North Carolina driver’s license. This position is eligible for overtime pay.
