Adopt a Park

Get Involved in your Neighborhood!

The Adopt-A-Park Program was established in 1989 by the Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department. It is now coordinated by Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful. The program provides the community a chance to become involved in the beautification and enhancement of our parks. The publicly-owned parks could use your personal concern and attention - you can help by participating in the Adopt-A-Park program. Individuals, groups, neighborhood associations, religious institutions, schools, and businesses may have a chance to contribute to the enhancement of their community parks and to provide a much-desired service to our city. The Recreation and Parks Department provides normal maintenance of the parks. But the adopter of the park would provide extra care and attention, which makes a park more beautiful.

General Guidelines

  • A park may be adopted for an indefinite period of time, unless there is another organization wishing to adopt a specific park.  If this is the case, there would be a maximum two-year adoption for those parks which are in demand.
  • Your responsibility will be to clean your park a minimum of 4 times a year. This includes picking up litter and placing the filled trash bags by the park's trash cans.
  • Inform your coordinator of your clean-up date at least seven days in advance and include any special requests that you may have.
  • Report any vandalism or possible hazards you may find in your adopted park.

What We Provide

  • We will assist your group in selecting a park for adoption by providing a list of available parks or other helpful information.
  • We will provide trash bags, gloves, etc.
  • We will provide safety instructions, recycling information, and pick up service for collected trash.

Special Projects

Special projects may be undertaken in your park with the approval of the program coordinator and the Recreation and Parks Director. The proposal for a project needs to be in a written format and submitted to the coordinator. The coordinator will discuss the project with the Director. You will be given a response and any special guidelines for your particular project.

Recognition

Recognition will be given by the placement of a sign in a prominent location with your group's name on it in your adopted park. The sign will remain in the park until your adoption term has ended.
