The North Carolina Supreme Court announced today that it will not hear a challenge brought by opponents to Winston-Salem’s 2003 annexation. The ruling means the annexation of nearly 20 square miles and more than 17,000 residents will go into effect on September 30.

Residents in the affected areas can call the City Information Line at 727-8000 for information regarding the annexation. The information line will be staffed until 7 p.m. today and reopen Saturday, August 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beginning August 21, the line will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays through Oct. 13. Operators will be able to answer questions concerning services, as well as the city tax rate and fees.

City employees will begin delivering packets to all homes in the annexed areas beginning August 23. The packets will contain information on city services and programs.

A Web page with information for new city residents, including answers to frequently asked questions, is available on the city’s Web site here. New residents can submit requests for services through the Citizen Service Desk on the home page.

Detailed maps of the annexed areas are also available here, and at the City Secretary’s Office in City Hall, Suite 140, 101 N. Main Street.
