Volunteers Needed for Big Sweep

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful is seeking volunteers for Big Sweep, the annual cleanup of rivers and streams in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

This year’s Big Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful has targeted more than 30 sites, including Peters Creek, Silas Creek, Salem Creek, Monarcas Creek, Mill Creek, Tanner’s Run, Salem Lake and the Yadkin River.

Individuals and groups interested in participating should register with Keep Winston Salem Beautiful at 727-8013 to be assigned a cleanup site. Specific sites can be requested. Each site will have a zone captain coordinating the cleanup and volunteers will be provided with all the supplies they need. Lunch will be provided at each area after the cleanup.

This year’s Big Sweep in Forsyth County is being sponsored by First Citizens Bank, Fox 8, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Whole Foods Market, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Waste Management, Krispy Kreme, Sign Master, the Winston-Salem Stormwater Division, Liberty Lincoln Mercury, Prudential Carolinas Realty, and McLain, Steedle, Chermak & Hanson Orthodontics.

During last year’s Big Sweep in Forsyth County, more than 2,100 volunteers pulled 20 tons of trash and debris from local waterways.
