Festival, Forums Highlight Race Equality Week

Human Relations - Sept. 21, 2006
Contact: Wanda Allen-Abraha, 727-2429

The annual Hispanic festival and two forums exploring race and community relations will be held this month in celebration of Race Equality Week, Sept. 25 - 29.

Fiesta 2006, celebrating diversity, Hispanic/Latino heritage and cross-cultural understanding among all people, will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, noon to 8 p.m. along Fourth and Spruce streets in downtown Winston-Salem. There will be food, music, dancing, arts and crafts and children’s activities. Fiesta 2006 is sponsored by the Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad and co-sponsored by the city of Winston Salem and other local agencies.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Mayor Allen Joines will welcome participants to a Student Race Relations Forum to be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Reagan High School. Students from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high schools will discuss their perspectives on the state of race relations.

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, the Human Relations Commission will sponsor the fifth in the "Beyond Soul and Salsa" series of forums on African-American/Hispanic issues. The forum will discuss economic development in East Winston and the Waughtown neighborhood, the Lakeside apartments, housing and cultural issues (including the Neighborhood Improvement Plan), and perceptions about attendance at the 4th Street Jazz concerts. The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 2850 New Walkertown Road.
