Fire Department - Oct. 3, 2006 Contact: Mary Fergusson, 773-7965
Cooking fires are the leading cause of house fires. During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8 - 14, the Winston-Salem Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association are stressing fire prevention in the kitchen with the theme: "Prevent cooking fires - watch what you heat."
One out of three house fires start in the kitchen, according to the association. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of fire-related injuries. To prevent cooking fires, follow these guidelines:
• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling or boiling food.
• If you must leave the room, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
• Check on food regularly when simmering, baking or roasting. Stay home, and use a timer.
• When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves. Do not lean over a stove with a loose-fitting blouse or shirt.
• Keep potholders, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags and other flammable objects away from the stovetop.
• Clean up food and grease from burners and stove tops.
