Human Relations Dec. 11, 2006
Contact: Human Relations: Wanda Allen-Abraha, 727-2429

Crossing 52 Initiative: Mary Dickinson, 659-2464

The Winston-Salem Human Relations Department is co-sponsoring a free poetry workshop for middle- and high-school teachers as part of a Poetry Slam Contest the Crossing 52 Initiative is organizing.

The organization is now accepting applications from teachers interested in participating in the workshop, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan 27. Poetry slammers and performers will explain poetry slams and how they are organized. Participants will receive materials to help them organize a slam at their school. Lunch will be provided.

The Crossing 52 Initiative will select 20 teachers to receive $100 stipends to hold poetry slams in their schools on the topics of blurring racial barriers and racial harmony (or disharmony) at school. Some of the winners will be invited to participate in the annual Human Relations banquet on Feb. 22.

For further information or to apply for the workshop, call Mary Dickinson at 659-2464 or e-mail mdickinson@triad.rr.com.
