NBA Star Josh Howard to Dedicate Outdoor Court at Reynolds Park Recreation Center

Recreation and Parks - Sept. 19, 2006
Contact: Tim Grant, 727-2063

Josh Howard, a star player on the Dallas Mavericks basketball team and a former stand-out at Wake Forest University, will be in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Sept. 23, to dedicate improvements to an outdoor court at the Reynolds Park Recreation Center. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

The dedication is an invitation-only event, but media are invited to attend.

Howard will be joined by Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks; Avery Johnson, the team’s head coach; and Donnie Nelson, the president of basketball operations.

Howard, a native of Winston-Salem, grew up in the Morningside neighborhood and played youth basketball at the recreation center. While in college, he worked during the summers for Recreation and Parks.

Since graduating from college, Howard has returned to Winston-Salem every summer to put on a free basketball camp at Reynolds Park Recreation Center. The improvements to the outdoor court are an extension of that effort.

They include bleachers, a fence to corral stray balls before they roll down the hill, new goals and an all-weather Sport Court surface with Howard’s signature embedded in the surface. At Howard’s request, the court surface will also have his mother’s and his grandmother’s initials.
