Special Olympics Forsyth County Receives Grant

Recreation & Parks - Dec. 20, 2006
Contact: Lisa Kiser: 727-2505

The Winston-Salem City Employees’ Credit Union has donated $11,500 to Special Olympics Forsyth County to help finance programs that serve athletes with disabilities.
The credit union raised the money through its “skip-a-pay” campaign. For a small fee, members can skip a payment at the holidays, knowing that at least half of the $40 processing fee will be donated to a community organization, said Tony Ebron, the president of the credit union.

“It’s an annual program we started in 2004, and our effort is to do what credit unions are meant to do, which is to help organizations that do good things for people in the community,” Ebron said. “When we send out information about the skip-a-pay campaign we let our members know what organization we are working with that year, so they know where their money is going if they participate.”

The money will be used for uniforms, equipment, entry fees, and travel expenses for more than 1,500 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Forsyth County, said Lisa Kiser, the program coordinator. “This donation was a wonderful holiday surprise,” Kiser said. “There are a lot of costs associated with any sports program and Special Olympics is no exception. The generosity of the Winston-Salem Employees’ Credit Union and its members will greatly help us serve athletes with disabilities throughout Forsyth County.”
