Emergency Preparedness Night at Ernie Shore Field

Fireworks, a roll-over simulator, a crawl-through fire safety house and a "tornado maker" highlight the second annual Emergency Preparedness Night, coming to Ernie Shore Field Aug. 31 during the Winston-Salem Warthog’s last home game of the 2007 season.
More than 50 local agencies and businesses will be exhibiting during the game to raise awareness of the need to be prepared for emergencies, says Michelle Brock, an emergency management coordinator with the Office of Emergency Management. "Too many people never prepare for an emergency because they think it won’t happen to them," Brock said. "Research shows that on average, people need to hear the message 17 times before they act on it. We’re hoping to reduce that with this event."
In addition to simulators and table displays, equipment exhibitions in the parking lot outside Ernie Shore Field will include the Salvation Army disaster canteen, the SORT mobile emergency room, a mobile surgical unit, fire trucks and police vehicles. During the Warthogs game, dogs of the Triad Bloodhound Team and such mascots as Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey the Bear will roam the stadium.
The Warthogs game will be preceded by a 30-minute softball game between local public safety personnel competing as the "Fire Dogs" and the "Crime Dogs," starting at 6 p.m.
