Fair Housing Month Activities Scheduled

The city’s annual observance of Fair Housing Month will commence April 9 with Mayor Allen Joines reading a proclamation at noon at the office of the Winston-Salem Regional Association of Realtors, 195 Executive Park Blvd., Winston-Salem.
Fair Housing Month promotes the federal Fair Housing Act and its laws against housing discrimination. Winston-Salem has a fair housing ordinance that mirrors the Fair Housing Act. The city’s Human Relations Department investigates housing discrimination complaints and enforces the Fair Housing Act.
Other events planned during Fair Housing Month include:
- Fair Housing Training, April 4 at 10 a.m. in the Committee Room on the second floor of City Hall, 101 N. Main Street. The training is for landlords and tenants and covers tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities.
- Project Homeless Connect, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the LJVM Coliseum Annex, 414 Deacon Blvd. Project Homeless Connect brings together volunteers service providers and people who are homeless or experiencing a housing crisis to establish connections to end their housing crisis. The event will include agencies that deal with employment, job training, education, substance abuse, housing, emergency assistance, social security and veterans.
- The annual Fair Housing Summit for housing professionals, April 24 at 11 a.m. at the LJVM Coliseum, 2825 University Parkway.
In addition, the Nexus TV talk show on WSTV 13 during April features Robert Sanders of Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan, and Mellin Parker of the city’s Housing/Neighborhood Development Department, discussing local fair housing initiatives.
