Planning Department - Sept. 19, 2007
Contact: Lynda Schwan, 747-7051

Ed McMahon, a senior resident fellow at the Urban Land Institute and nationally renowned authority on sustainable development, land conservation and urban design, will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony announcing the 2007 Community Appearance Awards program Oct. 16.

McMahon is an attorney, community planner, lecturer, author and expert on the topics of sustainable development, land conservation, urban design and historic preservation. Before joining the Urban Land Institute he served as vice president and director of land use programs at the Conservation Fund, where he worked to improve both land conservation and land development practices through programs that balance economic and environmental goals.

The Community Appearance Commission sponsors the biennial Community Appearance Awards to honor outstanding efforts in community beautification and excellence in design. This year the commission will present 13 Community Appearance Awards during a program at the Anderson Center of Winston-Salem State University. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and McMahon will speak at 6:30 p.m.

There is no charge for attending McMahon’s speech and the awards presentation. Tickets for dinner are $20 and must be reserved in advance. For more information or for dinner reservations call Lynda Schwan at 727-2087 or send an e-mail to lyndas@cityofws.org.

The public is also invited to hear McMahon speak at the Legacy reunion meeting Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 8 a.m., also at the Anderson Center. The reunion meeting will reconvene the original members of the committee that wrote the Legacy development guide for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, along with developers, home builders and local business leaders. The meeting will also serve as a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the City-County Planning Board.
