Utilities Division Flushing Water in Germanton Area

Utilities Division - Sept. 10, 2007
Contact: Scott Angell, 650-7650

On Monday, Sept. 10, Utilities personnel began flushing the water system at all dead end streets within the general boundaries of N.C. 8 north of Memorial Industrial School Road, flushing all the side streets up to and including N.C. 65.

Division crews will begin work west on N.C. 65 and flush all the dead end lines to the end of the system at Bannertown Church Road. Work will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. and is scheduled to be completed September 13.

Residents in the immediate vicinity of the work area may experience temporary discoloration of their water. The discolored water does not pose any health concerns. Customers who experience discoloration can clear their pipes by running their water faucets for several minutes until the water clears. If discoloration remains, call 650-7650 between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. or 727-2345 after 5 p.m. to report the problem. The Utilities Division recommends that customers in the affected area refrain from washing whites clothes (and especially using bleach) while crews are flushing the system.

Scott Angell, the construction and maintenance engineer for the Utilities Division, said that although it may appear that the division is wasting water by opening hydrants to flush the system, this process is part of a maintenance program necessary to maintain the integrity of the entire water system. Crews will not flush any more water than necessary to complete this project.
