The 28th annual commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 21, in the Benton Convention Center, 301 W. Fifth St. The commemoration is free and open to the public.

Henry J. Pankey, an educator and author of "Standing in the Shadows of Greatness," will be the keynote speaker. Pankey is a North Carolina native and education consultant who received national acclaim for his success in turning around low-performance schools in New York and North Carolina. He was one of the chief architects of the "Dress for Success" program in the New York City Schools.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is "Needed: Hope, Love, Faith, Courage and Leadership." Dr. Charlie L. Kennedy and the members of the Crossing 52 initiative will receive the Martin Luther King Jr. "Dare to Make a Difference Award."

The Martin Luther King Jr. Noon Hour Commemoration is organized by Mutter D. Evans and co-sponsored by the Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission and the Winston-Salem chapter of the NAACP.
