Open House Scheduled for Nov. 15 at Elledge Plant

Utilities Division - Nov. 7, 2008
Contact: Frank Crump, 765-0130

Elledge Plant Open House 11/15/2008The City-County Utilities Division will hold an open house and free tours of the Archie Elledge Wastewater Treatment Plant from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. The open house will include information about plans to upgrade the plant.

Tours will start every 30 minutes and will include an overview of the wastewater treatment process and a tour of the Elledge plant and the new biosolids drying facility, which turns wastewater sludge into a pellet-size soil additive. Tours will depart from the Manson Meads Complex, next to the plant, at 2799 Griffith Road, Winston-Salem.

The Elledge plant began operating in 1956 and can treat up to 30 million gallons of sewage a day. Construction to build new primary clarifying basins is scheduled to begin by the end of November. The new basins will be at a higher elevation than the current basins and less susceptible to flooding from Salem Creek. A new control building and pump station will also be built. In all, the improvements will cost $51.9 million.
