Winston-Salem Student Places Third in
Sister Cities International Young Artists Showcase

Holly Fulton, a high school senior at the U.N.C. School of the Arts this year, placed third in the Sister Cities International 2008 Young Artists Showcase for her pencil-and-watercolor composition titled “City of the Arts.”

Fulton submitted the work last school year, while she was a student in the advanced placement art class at the Career Center. Fulton received a $300 prize and her drawing will spend the next year on tour with Sister Cities International.

“City of the Arts” depicts the brick wall of a building being turned into a mural. “My favorite form of art is graffiti, because I think it’s really prominent, so I wanted to use graffiti,” Fulton said. “Then I took something that would represent each of our sister cities and put it on the wall. And in the middle it says ‘unite.’ ” The drawing also includes the image of a person working on the mural image. “I wanted it to be interactive and not completed,” Fulton said. “Someone is still working on it.”

To represent Winston-Salem’s four sister cites, the mural includes a dragon (for Shanghai, Yang Pu District, China), a wave (for Nassau, Bahamas), wine grapes (for Ungheni, Moldova), and the face of an African child (for Kumasi, Ghana).

Since 1988, the Sister Cities International Young Artists Showcase has encouraged youth from around the globe to interpret through art the organization’s mission of promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.

The theme for this year’s competition, "A Reflection of Your Community," was designed to allow the artists to share what life is like for young people in their world, while celebrating the uniqueness of cities, towns, and communities throughout the world.
