Utilities Completes West End Project, Begins Work in West Salem

Utilities Division - June 13, 2008
Contact: Mike Patton, 771-5121

The 18-month project to replace water and sewer lines in the West End neighborhood is completed except for a few miscellaneous tasks. The Utilities Division is now beginning a similar project in the northern portion of the West Salem neighborhood.

The work area is bordered by Peters Creek Parkway to the west, Broad Street to the east, Bank Street to the south and Business Interstate 40 to the north.

Some of the infrastructure in this area is up to 100 years old. A new water distribution system will be installed, including pipes, fire hydrants, valves and water meters. The sewer system will be rehabilitated using trenchless or semi-trenchless methods to repair or replace the existing pipe in place. The project is expected to last through July 2009.

Work will begin on Monday, June 16. Apple and Franklin streets will be closed between Green and Granville streets. The streets are scheduled to be closed for three weeks. Detours will be posted.

For more information call City Link at 727-8000.

Updates to the project will be linked in the right column of the city's home page.
