Winston-Salem Again Named Tree City USA

Vegetation Management - Feb. 13, 2009
Contact: Keith Finch, 748-3019

Tree City USAWinston-Salem has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of the city’s commitment to urban forestry. It is the ninth year Winston-Salem has received this national recognition.

To become a Tree City USA, a community must have a tree board or department; must have a tree-care ordinance; must have a comprehensive community forestry program; and must hold an Arbor Day observance.

John Rosenow, the chief executive of the foundation, said the Tree City designation recognizes the work of elected officials and city staff to plant and care for trees. “Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and they also provide environmental and economic benefits,” Rosenow said. “Cities that are recognized with a Tree City USA designation go to great lengths to plant and care for the community forest.”

For more information about the city’s urban forestry program, contact Keith Finch, the city’s urban forester, at 748-3019. For more information about the Tree City USA program, go to www.arborday.org.
