September Is Campus Fire Safety Month

The Winston-Salem Fire Department is collaborating with Winston-Salem State University, Salem Academy & College, Wake Forest University, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in a series of events to raise awareness of fire safety during Campus Fire Safety Month, observed during September.

A building on each campus will hold a fire drill in the middle of the morning on Friday, Sept. 24.

In addition, students on each campus are invited to enter a contest to create a 1- to 2-minute video on campus fire safety. A winner will be selected from each school and will receive a $25 gift card from the Burn Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and a pizza party courtesy of Domino’s Pizza. Video rules and entry forms are available at each school’s housing and residence life office. The deadline for entries is Sept 30. The winners will be notified during Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 5.

The Fire Department is also participating in a state-wide project sponsored by the Michael H. Minger Foundation encouraging college students to participate in fire safety community service projects. The Minger Foundation was founded after the death of Michael Minger in an arson fire at Murray State University in Kentucky. Locally, the Fire Department is asking students to prepare skits about cooking safety and perform them for children at the International Corps Boys & Girls Club at 2850 New Walkertown Road at 5 p.m. Sept. 22 and at the Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club, 2100 Reynolds Park Road at 5 p.m. Sept. 23.
