The Planning Department has the following openings:
Title: GIS Specialist/Analyst (Project Planner) #207 Location: City-County Planning Board (Planning, Information and Graphic Services Team) Work Schedule: Regular Work Hours Salary: $46,045 DOQ [New Salary] Closing Date: Open until filled.
General Description: This position is under direct supervision of the Principal Planner for Planning, Information and Graphic Services team, performs complex technical cartographic/mapping and data analysis tasks related to the GIS; leads planning projects using GIS; produces graphic and tabular products to support planning reports and public presentations; prepares long-range planning studies and assists in citizen participation efforts.
Responsibilities include: Leads department work program projects, or parts thereof, using GIS as tool in research or production; produces custom maps and other GIS products for planning, other departments, other municipalities, and public; assures quality control in data acquisition and update; assembles source material; digitizes map data; database data entry; creates and maintains GIS geodatabases; designs and prepares cartographic compositions and report products; presents results to staff, officials and public; creates custom programs/scripts to prepare map products and reports; maintains supplies and equipments; performs system backup; designs and develops statistical applications and reports as pertains to planning; serves as staff liaison to Census Bureau, other governmental agencies; assists staff with hardware/software problems; provides documentation for custom programs and current listings of data condition and availability; adapts other data types (remotely sensed data, maps, tabular and textual data) for integration into system. May supervise GIS technicians.
Requirements: MA/MS degree or equivalent in geography, mapping sciences or related degree preferred or BA/BS with 3-5 years technical mapping experience. Experience in planning preferred, GISP (Certified GIS Professional) and/or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification a plus.
Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of GIS; expertise in map composition, design and production; ability to analyze and systematically compile spatial data and determine appropriate graphic presentation. Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility are a must. Ability to work independently, with minimal direction; ability to work on multiple projects at once; experience in database construction and maintenance; programming/scripting language experience for ESRI products (VB, Python), RDMS experience and web authoring language a plus; statistical analysis of spatial data; knowledge of microcomputer hardware, operating system software and application software; knowledge of economic, demographic, and other public databases as well as alternative data sources for the extraction of natural data; knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit for extended periods of time at a computer workstation. Must be able to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
Exemption Status: This position is exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay.
