Yadkin River Commission
est. May 15, 1991 Yadkin River Commission c/o City-County Planning Board PO Box 2511 Winston-Salem, NC 27102 336.747.7058 phone 336.748.3163 fax Margaret Bessette e-mail: margb@cityofws.org |
History of the Commission
The Yadkin River Commission (YRC) was formed in 1991 through the combined efforts of the Davie County, Forsyth County, and Yadking County Commissioners. Surry County was added to the Commission in 1995.
Mission
For decades, the Yadkin River Valley remained essentially unchanged. Recently, however, including wineries, the river has become the object of economic interests. It is now a magnet for new development and an increasingly important regional source of sand, bringing new treatment demands for drinking water and waste disposal. These issues are complicated by various municipal and county boundaries along the river. Residents in one county are often unaware of river-related plans in adjacent counties until they are affected by them. The Yadkin River Commission strives to overcome these problems by taking a cooperative regional approach to Yadkin Valley issues.
Meetings
Commission members meet quarterly (Jan., April, July, Oct.) on the third Thursday of the month. Special meetings may be scheduled as needed. For meeting information, please contact the Margaret Bessette at margb@cityofws.org or the City-County Planning Department at (336) 747-7058.
