Community Appearance Awards

by Amy Crum

The 2012 Community Appearance Awards Program will be held April 30, 2012, at the Old Salem Museums & Gardens Visitor Center.

The Community Appearance Commission sponsors a biennial Awards program to honor the efforts of businesses, individuals, and community groups who have had a positive impact on the appearance of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. These awards recognize those whose thoughtful design and maintenance of our built and natural environment play a significant role in creating the high quality of life we value in our community.

If you would like to nominate a project or individual for an award, please follow the listed instructions.  To be eligible, projects must be complete and located in Forsyth County.  Entries that do not receive a biennial award may be resubmitted for an award in subsequent years.  Deadline for submittal of nominations is Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

For additional information, please contact Amy Crum at 336-747-7051 or amyc@cityofws.org.

The Community Appearance Commission held their 2009 Awards Ceremony on October 19, 2009, at the Old Salem Visitor Center. The Commission honored 17 individuals and projects for their outstanding achievements in community appearance and design.

Mr. Mitchell Silver, AICP, Director of Planning for the City of Raleigh, was the keynote speaker for the event. During his speech entitled "The Value of Good Design and Appearance," Mr. Silver spoke of creating a city of lasting value. He stated that architecture should be viewed and celebrated as art and that there should be a rebirth of civic pride in design. Good aesthetics shape the experience of place and good design of buildings and places impacts our community's character and memories for the future.
