Forsyth County Loves Landmarks!

And we would love to have more!  So, here is your initiation to roll up your sleeves, do a little detective work, research to your heart’s content, and send us your properties!  

Local Historic Landmark designation is a program sponsored by the Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission.  The program is a great way to help properties that have been designated as local landmarks.  These landmarks are Forsyth County's “cream of the crop” historic resources, like the Nissen Building, Korner’s Folly, the Rural Hall Depot, and Oak Grove School.  While not every old property can be a landmark, there sure are lots that could be!  The basic guidelines are that a property must be at least 50 years old, have special individual significance to the community, and have a majority of its original architectural or design integrity remaining. 

Here is more good news!  Once a property becomes a landmark, the property owner can apply to the Forsyth County Tax Department to receive up to a 50% property tax deferral.  Also, the Historic Resources Commission reviews all proposed changes to designated properties before those changes are made.  That way, the property keeps its architectural and historical significance for future generations to enjoy!
