Accepting Applications for Fall 2009 Citizens’ Police Academy

Winston-Salem Police Department - June 1, 2009
Contact: Corporal D.N. McCracken 773-7788

The Police Department is accepting applications for the fall session of the Citizens’ Police Academy, which will begin September 1, 2009.

The purpose of the Citizens' Police Academy is to foster better understanding between citizens and police through education.  The Citizen's Police Academy is a twelve-week program of  instruction provided each Tuesday night from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.  The program is designed to give citizens an opportunity to become better acquainted with the law enforcement profession and the role of the Department within the community.

The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to those of the regular Police Academy, with a mix of lecture and scenario/hands-on training. The weekly sessions are not intended to train participants to be police officers but are intended to help create a citizenry that is both familiar and comfortable with their police department. The classes are taught by officers and civilian employees throughout the department.

The Citizens’ Police Academy will introduce students to a variety of topics including: departmental functions, search and seizure laws, use of force, firearm training simulator, K-9 and special operation demonstrations, crime prevention, domestic violence, criminal investigations, vice/narcotics, and many other law-enforcement-related topics.

Classes will be held at the Public Safety Center, 725 N. Cherry Street Winston-Salem, NC. Enrollment is open to any citizen 18 years of age or older who resides, works, or attends school in Forsyth County. Anyone interested in attending the Citizens’ Police Academy may call the Winston-Salem Police Department for an application at 773-7788, or complete and send the online application. The class will be limited to 30 participants.

Deadline for application return is August 12, 2009.

NOTE: This is NOT an application for employment. If you are interested in becoming a police officer, please contact our Recruiting Unit at 773-7925.

The Winston-Salem Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc.
