Attorney General Wins Case Against Telemarketers

In July 2009 North Carolina State Attorney General filed a law suit against a Virgina based company, Media Synergy Group, after they recieved complaints from residents of North Carolina about unsolicited sales calls.  "These so-called robocalls are illegal under North Carolina law unless a live caller first introduces the call and asks if you're willing to listen to a recorded message" a press release from the attorney generals office states.  The attorney general's office notified Media Synergy Group in 2009 when they first received the complaint, and the company advised that they would fix the problem, however it continued.  Recently a Wake County Superior Court judge sided with Attorney General Cooper and issued a permanent injunction against Media Synergy Group and its president.  The order prohibits the company, its employees or agents from calling any North Carolina phone numbers and also ordered them to pay $421,500 in civil penalties.

Anyone wishing to report illegal telemarketing calls can report same to the North Carolina Attorney General's office by calling 1-800-5-NO-SCAM.  If you are wanting to reduce the number of telemarketing calls that you are receiving you can do so by adding you home and mobile phone numbers to the national Do Not Call Registry by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the number that you want to add.

Increased Number of Housebreakings - Protect Your Valuables

The Winston-Salem Police Department has recently seen an increase in daytime housebreakings.  Please know that Officers and Detectives are investigating these cases to the fullest and using all avaliable resources.  Many of these incidents are taking place during the daytime when homeowners are not at home or may be returning from out-of-town travel.  Over the next few months, Officers with the Crime Prevention Unit will be sending maps and other information concerning the recent increase in property crimes to your neighborhood watch chairperson.  We are asking that upon receiving this information, you will please share it among your neighbors and use it for discussion at your neighborhood watch meetings.

With the passing of the Christmas holiday, please take a few minutes and update your home inventory with any new items that you may have recieved.  This should only take a few minutes to complete and will be a tremendous help to police officers and detectives invenstigating a property crime, if you become a victim.  Additionally the Crime Prevention Unit has received four engravers that can be borrowed.  It is recommended and suggested that if an item does not have a serial number that you create one.  If you are interested in borrowing an engraver, please contact the Crime Prevention Unit.
