Police Chief Scott A. Cunningham

Chief Cunningham being sworn in to officeThe Winston-Salem Police Department welcomes Scott A. Cunningham as chief of police.  Chief Cunningham assumed the duties of Police Chief on June 30, 2008, upon the retirement of Chief Patricia Norris.

Following a nationwide search, Chief Cunningham was appointed to lead the Winston-Salem Police Department in its commitment of service excellence.  He has extensive experience in law enforcement, having worked through the ranks of the Tampa Police Department where he retired as the assistant chief of operations after a 24 year career.  He had recently served as the chief of police in Cary, North Carolina.

Chief Cunningham is committed to provide leadership that aggressively combats crime and strengthens the relationships of the department with the community.  He is eager to begin working towards safer neighborhoods through a comprehensive community safety plan that invigorates the department's attack on crime.

Chief Cunningham, 51, holds a bachelor's degree with a double major in history and forensic studies, a master's in public administration, and a doctorate in adult education and organizational management.  He is a team leader for the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies.
