Black History Coloring and Essay Contest
Celebrating Black History Month is a way to honor and recognize all that African-Americans have done, not just in the fight for equality, but for the betterment of our country as a whole. Established in 1976, Black History Month remains one of the most heavily observed month-long celebrations. The four-week-long designation takes place each February and first began as Negro History Week in 1926.
In honor of Black History Month the public is invited to join the Police Department along with the Recreation and Parks Department in recognizing some of the first African-American police officers with a special program and reception. As a way to commemorate the occasion, the Recreation Department is sponsoring a coloring and essay contest.
