Become a Lifeguard!

The aquatic program hires more than 65 lifeguards each year!

Each lifeguard must be certified inLifegaurd the
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course. This course teaches accident prevention, water rescue skills, First Aid and CPR for the professional rescuer.

Each lifeguard also goes through 20 hours of preseason in-service training and is taught the policies and procedures of the City and the Recreation and Parks Department. Their swimming and rescue skills are examined to assure they are at a high standard.

Once the summer has started, each lifeguard goes through in-service training each week.  Lifeguard rescue, first aid and CPR skills are practiced, observed and evaluated to maintain the high standards required by the Aquatics Program.

Working as a lifeguard for the Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department can be a very satisfying job. Lifeguards have a tremendous amount of responsibility at swimming pools. They must take care of every patron who visits the pool.  With the American Red Cross Lifeguard training and the Recreation and Parks Department in-service training, lifeguards can perform their job with a high level of success and satisfaction.

Please note that candidates must be a least 16 years old by June 1st to be eligible to become a lifeguard. For more information call, Dick Butler 734-1212.
