Winston-Salem is implementing curbside garbage collection
All city households will receive free use of a sturdy, 96-gallon cart for their household garbage under the curbside garbage collection program the City Council authorized June 21.
The cart can hold 10 garbage bags. This should be big enough to meet the needs even of large families. They roll easily, even when fully loaded.
City households will convert to curbside collection as the carts are delivered. The Sanitation Department is scheduled to begin delivering carts in August to city households that are not already participating in the curbside collection program. The schedule will depend on the ability of the manufacturer to produce and deliver the carts. All city households should receive a cart by the end of October.
Households with no one physically able to roll out the cart may request an exemption and continue to receive backyard collection. Use the form linked below or call City Link at 727-8000. No exemptions will be granted without a written certification.
Certification of Inability to participate in curbside garbage collection [pdf/1p] NOTE: Residents who receive a Certificate of Inabilitiy should continue to use their current garbage can for garbage collection.
Curbside collection will save taxpayers money because it is more efficient. It takes less time, saves fuel, reduces truck emissions and reduces employee injuries. Curbside collection will also reduce the havoc that winter storms play on garbage collection schedules.
After curbside garbage collection is fully implemented, the city may adjust some collection routes to take advantage of the reduced time it takes to complete a collection route. This may lead to changes in collection days for some residents.
