Snow and Ice Control

The City of Winston-Salem has the following equipment for snow removal:

     6   MOTOR GRADERS

    37  TRUCKS WITH PUSH PLOWS

    29  SALT SPREADERS

This equipment is used by two shifts working 24 hours a day to clear 1,001 miles of streets. During a major snowfall, the Streets Division may log as many as 25,000 miles by either plowing or spreading deicing salts and sand.

Streets in Winston-Salem are cleared in order of priority with major routes receiving top priority, then residential collector streets. If conditions dictate, the Streets Division has the capability of covering all streets within the city limits with the exceptions of dead end and dirt streets.

Winston-Salem is the only city in this area to clear not only city-maintained streets, but also many state-maintained streets and highways within the city limits, not including US 52/I-40 and Business 40/US 421.

The city maintains a stockpile of 2,000 tons of deicing salt and 1,500 cu.yd. of sand for aiding in the ice and snow control process.

For any questions or to report problems, please contact Malcolm Lewis, Assistant Streets Director at 727-8000 or malcolml@cityofws.org.
