Stop Sign Policy
The Winston-Salem Department of Transportation (WSDOT) installs stop signs at intersections with no traffic control signs when a traffic engineering study indicates they are needed. Three-way and four-way (or all-way) stops are used only to improve safety. National studies and local experience both indicate they are ineffective for speed control and should not be used for this purpose.
The guidelines the WSDOT uses when recommending all-way stops are:
- equal volume on both streets
- good sight distance to see approaching cars on the other street.
Please e-mail Calvin Johnson calvinj@cityofws.org at the WSDOT or call (336)727-2707 to request a stop sign.
