Leaf Composting & Yard Waste Disposal:
N.C. State Law (130A-309.10(F)3) prohibits the disposal of yard wastes (e.g., leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs, etc.) in sanitary landfills. Therefore, the division operates multiple leaf drop-off sites. Leaf drop-off sites are used as transfer stations from residences to the main composting site located off Reynolds Park Road. Leaves collected from city residents during the curbside collection program by city crews are recycled through a natural organic process into compost that is made available to the citizens of Winston-Salem at no charge.
The leaves are mixed with grass clippings whereby they are further compacted into rich mounds of organic leaf mulch humus, stored through the winter season, and offered back to the public for both private and commercial use in gardening, planting beds and landscaping.
The Utilities Division, 727-8418, announces the free loading of leaf mulch when available and the above directions of how to get to the site.
Loose Leaves and Grass: Loose leaves should be raked to the curb (not onto the street) from November 1 through January 1. At all other times, leaves should either be composted at home or placed in a yard waste cart for collection. The carts can be purchased from the city.
