The authority for establishing the Zoning Board of Adjustment is Article 19 of Chapter 160A of the North Carolina General Statutes. The Board was created by Section 25-17 of the City Code and adopted by the City Council on September 16, 1968. |
| Purpose/Function |
The purpose of the Board is to hear appeals of administrative decisions of the Zoning Officer; to hear requests for special use permits according to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO); to hear requests for variances of the dimensional requirements of the UDO; to serve as the Housing Appeals Board by hearing appeals of the decisions of the Housing Conservation Administrator; to serve as Watershed Review Board by hearing appeals for variances of the Salem Lake Watershed Protection Ordinance; and to hear appeals from decisions of the Historic Resources Commission. |
| Method of Appointment |
Five members and two alternates are appointed by the City Council upon the recommendation of the Mayor. One member and one alternate are appointed by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners upon the recommendation of the City Council, from persons who reside outside the limits of the City of Winston-Salem, but within the extraterritorial jurisdiction. |
