Human Relations - May 30, 2019

The city Human Relations staff and commission members will facilitate a "trust talk"between local persons with disabilities, their caregivers/service providers and police representatives on June 5 at 12:30 p.m. at The Enrichment Center, 1006 S.W. Marshall Street. The purpose is to build community trust by discussing issues and misconceptions that serve as barriers during police interactions with persons with mental and physical disabilities.

The trust talk will include representatives from The Adaptables Center for Independent Living, The Winston-Salem Mayor's Council for Persons with Disabilities, the N.C. Statewide Independent Living Council, and the Winston-Salem City Attorney's Office. The Winston-Salem Police Department will also participate. Residents with disabilities, agencies, and/or their caregivers, who are willing to provide input on positive interactions with the WSPD are encouraged to attend. However, due to limited seating, participants are required to preregister by contacting Pam Peoples-Joyner at 336-773-7962.
The Human Relations Department has been organizing trust talks since 2011 as a way to foster communication between law enforcement and the community.
