The city has more than 50 openings for light, medium and heavy equipment operators who can operate: 

  • Backhoes
  • Loaders
  • Dump Trucks
  • Other equipment

This job fair is open to anyone with a Class B permit, Class A permit or CDL. Come prepared to demonstrate your skills and receive a contingent job offer. Final job offers will be made Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Directions

From Business 40 Eastbound:

  • Take Exit 7 (Lowery Street). 
  • Turn right at the stop sign at the end of the ramp on to Lowery Street. 
  • Go approx. 1/2 mile and turn left into the Lowery Street Facility.
  • Bear to the left and look for Suite 122 (Employee Development).

From Business 40 Westbound:

  • Take Exit 7 (Fifth Street)
  • Turn left onto Lowery Court (opposite the entrance to the Winston-Salem Journal printing facility) 
  • Go to the stop sign (Lowery Street) and cross the street into the entrance to the Lowery Street Facility.
  • Bear to the left and look for Suite 122 (Employee Development).

What to Bring

  1. Your CDL License or Class A or Class B Permit
  2. Resume or employment history
  3. ID

What to Expect

All attendees will be asked to show their CDL or permit at check-in and meet briefly with a city Human Resources representative.

Attendees will then have a brief interview to assess their background and knowledge about operating equipment. They will then be asked to demonstrate their operating skills. 

Equipment on site will include:

  • Back hoe
  • Motor grader
  • Dump truck with trailer
  • Track loader
  • Hoist truck
  • Automated side loader truck
  • Sewer jet truck

Those who successfully complete the assessment will be invited on the spot to fill out a job application and could receive a contingent job offer. Candidates who accept the contingent job offer will be asked to provide information for a background check and take a drug-screening test (urinalysis) in order to receive a final job offer.

Contingent job offers will be made at the job fair, with final offers to be made by Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The city's Human Resources Department will have representatives available to answer questions about the city benefits and hiring process.

Qualifications/Job Requirements

For most city positions that require a CDL the following requirements are preferred:
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina (CDL) Commercial Driver's License.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 11th grade and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment. 
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and specialized maintenance and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Physical Requirements: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed): Must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs. and maneuver up to 3 miles; work with large and small objects. Most all positions will work outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and repetitive operations.
