Public Works Career Expo

The city has more than 100 openings in various departments for maintenance workers, laborers, vehicle operators and equipment operators. Come prepared to meet with city representatives and apply for a job on the spot.

Directions

From U.S. 52 Northbound:

  • Take Exit 111 (25th Street-28th Street).
  • Stay in left lane and turn left at light (Cleveland Avenue)
  • Just past the RR overpass bear left onto 28th Street
  • Turn right on Shorefair Drive just past Pine Hall Brick Co.
  • Take 28th Street until it merges with 27th Street and becomes two-way. Continue on the stoplight at the University Parkway.
  • Right on University Parkway and right at the next light on Deacon Boulevard.
  • Gate 5 is at 336 Deacon Blvd, on the right past the Fairgrounds Annex. If you go through a stoplight you went too far.

From U.S. 52 Southbound:

  • Take Exit 111 (N. Liberty Street)
  • Stay in the right lane and turn right at the end of the ramp on to North Liberty Street. (Sign at end of ramp will point the way toward 28th Street)
  • Just past the RR overpass bear left onto 28th Street
  • Take 28th Street until it merges with 27th Street and becomes two-way. Continue on the stoplight at the University Parkway.
  • Right on University Parkway and right at the next light on Deacon Boulevard.
  • Gate 5 is at 336 Deacon Blvd, on the right past the Fairgrounds Annex. If you go through a stoplight you went too far.

What to Bring

  3. CDL or permit (for equipment operator positions)

What to Expect

Candidates for all positions should bring an ID and resume or work history so that they can complete an application on-site. Attendees seeking vehicle operator, maintenance worker or laborer positions should have a valid North Carolina driver's license. Attendees seeking Equipment Operator positions should bring their commercial driver's license (CDL) or a CDL permit.

Attendees seeking an equipment operator position will be asked to show their CDL or permit and meet briefly with a city Human Resources representative. They will then meet with another city representative who will assess their background and knowledge about operating equipment. They will then be asked to demonstrate their operating skills on examples of equipment that the city uses.

Equipment on site will include:

  • Backhoe
  • Dump truck with trailer
  • Mini-excavator
  • Jet-Vac combo
  • Skid-steer

Those who successfully complete the assessment will be invited to fill out job applications on the spot.

Representatives will be available from five city departments: Utilities, Sanitation, Traffic Field Operations, Vegetation Management and Recreation Maintenance. If you have a preference for working with a particular department, you may indicate that on your job application.

The city's Human Resources Department will have representatives available to answer questions about the city benefits and hiring process.
