Directions

From U.S. 52 Northbound:

  • Take Exit 111 (25th Street-28th Street). 
  • Stay in left lane and turn left at light (Cleveland Avenue).
  • Just past the RR overpass bear left onto 28th Street. 
  • Take 28th Street until it merges with 27th Street and becomes two-way.
  • Gate 9 will be on the right.

From U.S. 52 Southbound:

  • Take Exit 111 (N. Liberty Street)
  • Stay in the right lane and turn right at the end of the ramp on to North Liberty Street. (Sign at end of ramp will point the way toward 28th Street.) 
  • Just past the RR overpass bear left onto 28th Street. 
  • Take 28th Street until it merges with 27th Street and becomes two-way.
  • Gate 9 will be on the right.

  1. Your CDL license or CDL permit, if you have one (City equipment operators must have either a Class A or Class B CDL)

What to Expect

All attendees will check-in at the Education Building and meet briefly with a city Human Resources representative. Attendees will then go outside and meet with a city representative who will assess their background and knowledge about operating equipment. They will be asked to demonstrate their skills.

Those who successfully complete the assessment will be invited to fill out job applications.

The city's Human Resources Department will have representatives available to answer questions about the city benefits and hiring process.

Qualifications/Job Requirements

For most city positions that require a CDL the following requirements are preferred:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina (CDL) Commercial Driver's License. (CDL permit holders will receive city assistance in completing their CDL if they are hired.)
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 11th grade and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and specialized maintenance and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Physical Requirements: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed): Must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs. and maneuver up to 3 miles; work with large and small objects. Most all positions will work outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and repetitive operations.
