More than 100 students representing 12 youth advisory councils in North Carolina were in Winston-Salem Feb. 8-10, 2013 for a conference hosted by the Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council.
The theme of the conference was “Leadership and Teambuilding.” During the conference, attendees heard from local elected leaders and the heads of local organizations, including Mayor Allen Joines; Mayor Pro Tempore and Northeast Ward Council Member Vivian H. Burke; East Ward Council Member Derwin Montgomery; Dan Parsons, the executive director of Winston-Salem Rescue Mission; Valene Franco, the supervising attorney for the Winston-Salem office of Legal Aid of North Carolina; and Nora Baker, the Principal of the Year for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council comprises students from each high school in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County who are interested in civic engagement. Members work throughout the school year to learn about the community, engage in government, plan an annual project, participate in state-wide youth council programs, and volunteer their time. Staff support for the council is provided by the Human Relations Department.
