Representatives of the Human Relations Department and the Winston-Salem College Advisory Board are holding a meeting April 7 to discuss plans and collect public opinion on the boards new Neighborhood Mediation Committee, created to mediate disputes between city residents and college students.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Winston-Salem First Assembly, 3730 University Parkway.
The City Council, which appoints the members of the College Advisory Board, has asked the board to work on the issue of relations between students and city residents. Board member Aaron Bullock says the Neighborhood Mediation Committee would function similar to the way the Human Relations Department mediates disputes between landlords and tenants.
"Our goal is to create a system in which complaints can be received and dealt with in a peaceful manner," Bullock said. "We want to stray away from first contacts between students and their neighbors being with police officers involved."
